Nature and Wellbeing group in Somerset

The work of the Somerset Local Nature Partnership’s Nature and Wellbeing group has been going from strength to strength since it formed in 2021.

The group are working with partners across the county to promote and invest in nature-based approaches to health and social care. Somerset Wildlife Trust are one of several partners, and you can read more about the nature connection programmes we offer at somersetwildlife.org

The group’s aims are closely aligned with the Environmental Improvement Plan's stated focus to explore options for how best to embed green social prescribing, emphasising connection with nature as a way of improving mental health. The work of the group is also in line with the Wildlife's Trusts latest report that proves nature-based health projects save NHS time and money. In turn we know that nature connection greatly improves pro-environmental behaviour.

The interconnected crisis we find ourselves in call for a vital response that acts holistically for the benefit of wellness for both people and planet. Whether you live in the city or countryside, regular contact and connection with the natural world can have a meaningful impact on health and wellbeing.

The partnership were delighted to work with Here, Now Films to produce a short film sharing the benefits of nature connection and green social prescribing. You can watch the film here. They hosted a series of film screenings and co-design workshops in the Spring/Summer '23.

Over 150 attendees from 40+ organisations registered and contributed to developing a set of priorities for how to move forward with a nature and wellbeing offer in Somerset. These priorities will form the basis for informing the strategy and action plan and maintaining momentum amongst the flourishing networks of care providers putting nature connection at the heart of what they offer.
