About the event

This event is linked to a series of training opportunities being organised throughout this week across the Wessex region as part of a Natural England supported 'Wessex Citizen Science Pilot' which aims to promote and share best practice in citizen science.

Join our team of volunteers  from Somerset Wildlife Trust as part of an ongoing survey of intertidal habitats around our coasts. The data are being collated as part of a national survey being carried out by Wildlife Trusts across the UK.

You do not need to have any prior experience of survey work or of seashore ecology as there will be experts on hand to assist you.  Both complete beginners and people already trained in the ShoreSearch methods are very welcome. We will provide all the sampling kit, survey sheets and identification guides.

If you wish to find about more about the Shoresearch methodology and aims, we encourage you to also register for an online introductory session on Weds 26th February (7pm-8.30pm) which you will need to book separately (see separate event tab).  We are also running separate surveys at Lyme Regis (Dorset) on the 27th February and Clevedon Pier (North Somerset) on the 28th February.

What to bring

Adequate and waterproof clothes appropriate to the weather. We could be out for over 3 hours and conditions can change and be different out on the shore than inland. Please bring a packed lunch and a warm drink. There are lots of places in the town to get food or drinks before or after the survey. The nearest loos to the survey site are in the town (10+ minute walk from our survey site on the beach). The shore is uneven, muddy and slippery and in places we will be walking through shallow pools and streams so wellington boots are strongly advised.
