Help nature return to Honeygar

Situated in the Avalon Marshes, one of the largest and most important wetland areas in the UK, Honeygar is the Trust’s first ‘wilded’ site. Taken on to strengthen Somerset’s nature recovery network, advance our work to restore lowland peat, improve biodiversity and to create an exemplar site for nature-based solutions - a site that could demonstrate and share our ideas with others, to inspire and stimulate change, and establish a bolder and braver ambition for nature’s recovery in Somerset.

Thanks to the support of so many who have come with us on this journey, we have made incredible progress.

Preliminary surveys done early on in the project means we can clearly see the progress we’ve made, including improvements in soil and water quality, as well as species biodiversity. Our staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly, and the reward has been a site teeming with wildlife, from stunning meadow flowers to a vast array of birds and insects.

You can read more about the project in more detail below.

Got a few minutes...?

We are really close to completing Phase 1 of this pioneering project. But we need your help to push us over the line so Honeygar can continue its exciting journey.

As we prepare the site for the next phase of work it’s crucial that we continue the absolutely critical management work we’ve started and do even more monitoring and data gathering. From there, we can fully understand Honeygar’s precious wildlife residents, and put in place a variety of innovative habitat features that will ensure that all wildlife on the site is protected when we come to removing the derelict buildings on site. We need your help to do this.

We’ve raised almost £3.6 million so far and with one last push, and with your help we hope to raise the final £70,000 that will help us complete Phase 1 of the project.
