About the event

Peatlands are an amazing part of our landscapes, not only for the rare and specialised species they support but for the ecosystem services they provide like storing carbon, filtering drinking water, and mitigating flood waters. Unfortunately, Somerset has a long history of peat extraction, and a large percentage of the remaining peat on the Somerset Levels has been left damaged, making it more susceptible to drought and wildfire, as well as emitting carbon into the atmosphere.

In this live webinar, we'll be digging down into the truth about peat restoration, sorting the myths from the facts, and taking a look at what different peat restoration techniques might look like.

We'll be answering questions like:

  • What's the connection between peat and carbon?
  • Why is peat restoration significant in Somerset?
  • What does peat restoration look like on Somerset Wildlife Trust sites like Westhay Moor NNR and Honeygar?

What to expect:

  • 7:10 - 7:30 - what peat restoration is and why it's important
  • 7:30 - 7:45 - the importance of peat restoration in Somerset
  • 7:45 - 7:50 - what people and communities can do to help
  • 7:50 - 8:30 - Live Q&A session

This event is part of our Wilder Matters series, live online events from Somerset Wildlife Trust which help you get to heart of the biggest environmental topics of the day and their relevance to Somerset. We recommend you join us on the night for the full experience, as we cannot guarantee recordings will be made available promptly after the event.
