Practical Conservation Work Groups

Practical Conservation Work Groups

Location:
County-wide, Somerset
The practical conservation work groups carry out essential habitat management tasks for the benefit of local wildlife. Tasks are dependent on the season, but include coppicing, fencing or walling, grassland management, managing invasive species and path maintenance.

You don’t need any experience to join in as training will be given, however you do need suitable clothing, to be reasonably physically fit and enjoy being outside in all weathers!

Somerset Wildlife Trust practical volunteering groups run in several locations:

  • East Mendips Conservation Volunteers (seeking new volunteers!)
  • Peat Moors (NOT currently accepting new recruits)
  • West Mendip Conservation Volunteers (accepting applications)
  • Magnificent Meadows Conservation Volunteers (accepting applications)
  • East Poldens Conservation Volunteers (accepting applications)

There are also numerous community-lead groups which work on reserves and also support organisations such as the RSPB and Natural England. Wherever possible, to minimise the impact of travel on the environment, we would encourage you to volunteer locally.

In the first instance, please check our map (or view as a list) to find groups local to you.
