Somerset's Wilder Coast project

This exciting three-year project (2022-2025) received funds from Hinkley Point ‘C’ Community Fund (via the Somerset Community Foundation). It aimed to empower coastal communities to take more direct action for wildlife by wilding spaces to help deliver a Coastal Nature Recovery Network and increasing people’s involvement in coastal citizen science recording and monitoring to inform Somerset’s State of Nature.

Over the last three years it helped to raise awareness of the connection between Somerset’s coast and the country’s river catchments and inland habitats and encouraged communities to make the connections between their own local habitats and the rivers and streams that eventually enter the Bristol Channel.

In March 2025 we came together to celebrate the projects and events that have come out of the work carried out by all the partners, funders, supporters and Somerset Wildlife Trust. A huge thanks to everyone who got involved.

Those that know it well, know that there are some incredible places on our coast for people to enjoy, which also provide secure homes for a whole variety of stunning wildlife

Shoresearch - Jon Barratt

Shoresearch and Sea Watch

These two citizen science survey programmes are now evolving into one Specialist Recording Group. Currently there are no public survey dates available, however the work will continue and more information will follow soon!

Shoresearch is the Wildlife Trusts' national citizen science survey of intertidal shore - the exciting place where the sea meets the land. It's a great way to explore your local coast, learn more about the wildlife found there and add to our understanding of this important habitat.

Sea Watch Foundation's monitoring programme involved trained volunteer recording data through regular surveys along the coast organized by the Somerset Wildlife Trust.
