Your legacy is a Wilder Somerset

I wanted to contribute to a local cause close to my heart in my Will. I don’t have children, but my sister does. I truly hope there will be a world for them full of wildlife when they and their children, grow up.

Protect the wildlife you love for the next generation

Imagine leaving a gift like Rachel, that truly allows others to enjoy Somerset's wildlife and wild spaces for years to come - just as you do now. A gift that will provide a greener and wilder future for the people, places and wildlife of Somerset.

A gift in your Will of even 1% of your estate could make an enormous difference to our conservation work, and your loved ones would still inherit 99%. All you will need to take is the following information to your Financial Advisor:

  • Our address: Somerset Wildlife Trust, 34 Wellington Road, Taunton, Somerset TA1 5AW
  • Our registered charity number: 238372

Every gift allows us to protect more nature reserves, save more species, and ensure future generations can experience and enjoy nature.

Anthony Holley

Anthony Holley was not just a devoted member of Somerset Wildlife Trust, he was passionate about research as well. His PhD study of hare behaviour overturned the long held belief that ‘Mad March Hares’ were two males fighting for mating rights, proving that it’s actually a female fighting off unwanted male attention. Anthony was so passionate about creating a Wilder Somerset for future generations to enjoy that he left a generous gift in his Will to enable the Trust to continue its work. This money helped bolster our cash reserves, which are important to help protect us against emergencies or drops in income or allow us to take advantage of new opportunities.

John Keylock

In 1964, John was one of our co-founders, back when we were known as the Somerset Trust for Nature Conservation. When John passed away aged 82, the gifts he left in his will helped us with our core work, as well as protecting Somerset’s local ecology and investing in our Wildlife Watch groups for children. John was passionate about protecting Somerset’s wildlife for future generations to enjoy, and spent much of his time sharing his knowledge with others. Our Wildlife Watch groups are helping children understand wildlife – in a way that we are sure John would love.

David Wishart

Our Honeygar wilding project is a real gem in the Somerset Levels and Moors. This 81 Hectares of former dairy farm is our first wilding project and we’ve been restoring the land since we took possession in 2021. But without kind supporters like the late David Wishart, the project would have been off to a much rockier start. The gift he left in his will helped us move the project forward and will have a lasting impact on Somerset’s wildlife and wild places. By supporting our vision to create a greener and wilder future for the people, places and nature of Somerset, David’s memory will live on through the healthy, vibrant and diverse natural world he has helped protect.

Having been members of the Somerset Wildlife Trust for very many years and witnessed the brilliant conservation work they do, we feel the least we can do is to remember the Trust in our Wills. We hope that our gift will help the Trust continue their excellent work in safeguarding Somerset’s wildlife for future generations to enjoy.

Why include us in your Will

Somerset Wildlife Trust is the county’s largest conservation charity and all the funding we receive is spent on rescuing and restoring Somerset’s wildlife and wild places. Since 1964, we have been working across the county to ensure it remains one of the most varied and wildlife-rich places to live, work and explore.

20% of our income comes from regular donations from our amazing members, therefore we rely heavily on other donations, including gifts in Wills, to continue our challenging work of protecting the wildlife and wild places of Somerset. And, given the uncertain times we are operating in and the expected decline in other funding sources, the income from gifts in Wills is more vital to our work now than ever before.

We sincerely hope that any Will made in our favour will not be read for many years and whether you decide to leave part of your estate to Somerset Wildlife Trust or not, please do decide to make a Will!

How your gift might be spent

Gifts in Wills have enabled us to plan for future projects, react to emergency situations, buy land adjacent to our reserves to create wildlife networks and engage with schools and local communities.

Small or large, EVERY gift in every Will is valuable to us. Some are expressed as cash or a share of an estate. All are welcomed and will be used to support our work.

Even a gift of 1 percent of your estate could make a real difference to our work and, the great thing is, it does not cost you anything now and allows you to continue supporting our work well into the future. You could even save on inheritance tax if you leave a gift to charity.

Our promise to you

Somerset Wildlife Trust are proud to have a Legacy Charter, which details our commitments to legacy-leavers and their families.

Make a pledge and become a Wildlife Guardian

Thank you to our amazing members whose donations support 20% of our conservation work. Gifts in wills are also really important as these wonderful gifts enable us to buy land to create more nature reserves across the county, protect endangered species and engage local schools and communities with the wildlife on their doorstep.

If you would like to become a Wildlife Guardian by letting us know you have pledged a gift in your Will, please do get in touch. Wildlife Guardians choose to receive updates on our work and invites to our annual thank-you events, where they learn more about our work, meet the teams involved and understand how their gifts may be used.

By filling out the pledge form below you are not committing yourself and the form is not legally binding! By informing us of your intentions, you are simply allowing Somerset Wildlife Trust to confidently estimate future support for its cause.

Please help us create a greener and wilder future for the next generation by becoming a Wildlife Guardian today!
